Developments in genetic engineering mean we now have a different kind of interaction with ourselves and the world. We are capable of making alterations at a more fundamental level. However, beyond the mechanical - the logic of cause and effect - there is a sense of threat, a disquiet, a feeling that nature is indifferent to us - more powerful than reason.
