Cartographies, twenty-seven images, each 120 x 80cm from
tiled A4 Laserfax prints on polyester film

This work explored traditional notions of mapping, photography and an engagement with space. Land and seascape images were faxed to the gallery from various locations, including four Australian Antarctic bases.

The faxing of the images engaged space and contributed to the aesthetic of the work. This work was faxed from Davis Base and the text on the edges confirms the location date and time.

The images refer to generic rather than specific places and names such as Encounter Bay and Deception Bay help reference space to psychology. The format for presentation also alluded to maps or charts and created a single overall artwork, which attempts to construct meaning outside of that associated with the narrative content of a picture.

This image was faxed from Mawson Base, and the vertical shading is an artefact of the laserfax technology in use before the Internet was available there.
